Summer research project: Science Fiction film

guardians of the galaxy

1) The key information about the film / media language:

The sub genres this film fits into are future, space travel/exploration and alien invasion.

In this film space adventurer Peter Quill steals and orb wanted by the super villain of the film Ronan. After discovering its true power Quill has to gather his team of misfits to save the universe from the threat that the orb poses. The setting is linked to the genre because it is set in space, an alternate world/universe. The characters emphasise the science fiction genre as they aren't normal looking people. They have distinctive looks that differ them from humans such as the treelike humanoid Groot. The themes shown in this film are space travel which is evidently shown when Quill steals the orb.

2) The institution behind the film – this is the production company or film studio.

The production company of the film are marvel studios, marvel entertainment and moving picture company and the director is James Gunn. The main characters include - Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace and Sean Gunn. this production was released in July 31, 2014. The production company is famous for films such as The Avengers, Thor, Captain America and many more movies alike. It is known for the main genre the production company focuses on which are science fiction along with elements of fantasy. The film cost $232.3 million which was “slightly over the agreed budget.” and crossed the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office. The film was given a lot of positive reviews from citics. Its very family friendly and includes elements of comedy and from the characters. The movie has received some awards, including the Saturn award, ACCA award and the critics choice award.

3) The target audience

From how the film is presented I believe that the target audience is between the range of 12-25. This movie is family friendly and entertains that age group very well. I would say that this movie appeals to 50% boys and 50% girls/ with ABC1 social class.

10 questions!

1. I decided to do Media GCSE because I found it interesting and I wanted to try something new. I haven't done something that includes a lot of practical work and requires you to use your imagination and creativity.

2. I am mostly looking forward to doing film promotion because I like to watch a lot of films and it would be fun to make one of my own.

3. The knowledge and skills I hope to learn in media is how to use Photoshop to make and design things and also to be able to analyse something such as a piece of text thoroughly.

4. Realistically I hope to achieve at least B grade however I am aiming for an A.

5. The last film I watched was Avengers: Age of Ultron.

6. I think the film appealed to the audience because it was a family movie. There isn't a strict age boundary to watch it meaning people of all ages could enjoy it. The main genre of the movie was fantasy because it contained things like superhero powers. The audience can relate to it because at some point of their lives they would have wanted powers, usually at a younger age. So being able to visualise it makes them want to watch the movie even more.

7. I have used my phone, computer and TV to access the media in the last 24 hours

8. The device I use to access media often is my phone. I use it a lot to communicate and I sometimes check the news and weather but it is usually on every morning on TV.

9. Jurassic world fits under the genre's of action, adventure thriller and sci-fi

10. Jurassic park appeals to a family audience because its about dinosaurs and usually young children have a strong interest for them. The thriller part of the movie also makes it suitable for adults to watch as it can also allow them to watch the movie without getting bored.
